ASTM D7803-New standard for preparing HDG steel for powder coatings
Bridges are one example of construction projects that are often built from hot-dip galvanized steel. How to coat this steel without adhesion failure of the powder system is explained in the new ASTM standard. The new standard, ASTM D7803, “Practice for Preparation of Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized)Coated Iron and Steel Product and Hardware Surfaces for Powder Coatings” covers surface preparation and thermal pretreatment of iron and steel products and hardware which have not been painted or powder coated previously (Practice D6386).Read More …
Advantages of UV-curable powder coatings
UV-curable powder coating is one of the fastest coating chemistries available. From start to finish the entire process for finishing MDF takes 20 min or less, depending on chemistry and part geometry, making it an ideal finish for applications that require a quick turnaround. A completed part requires only one coat, allowing increased production with 40 to 60 percent less energy than other finishing processes. The UV-curing process is much simpler than other finishing technologies. Curing of a liquid finishRead More …
Why the use of yellow iron oxides in high-temperature-cured coatings is limited
Standard yellow iron oxides are the ideal inorganic pigments to develop a wide range of color shades due to the advantages in performance and cost provided by their high hiding power and opacity, excellent weather, light and chemical fastness, and reduced price. But their use in high-temperature-cured coatings such as coil coating, powder coatings or stoving paints is limited. Why? When yellow iron oxides are submitted to high temperatures, their goethite structure (FeOOH) dehydrates and partially turns into hematite (Fe2O3), which is the crystal structure of red iron oxide. This is why the standard yellow iron oxide that exists before curing becomes darker and browner . This change can take place from temperatures close to 160ºC, depending on the curing time, the binder system and the coating formulation itself.
Coil coating is a continuous industrial process
Coil coating is a continuous industrial process in which multiple layers of organic film are applied and cured on a moving metal strip. The paints used are liquid (solvent-based) and are generally composed of polyesters with acid- or hydroxy- endgroups able to crosslink with melamines or isocyanates to form a complete network with film properties that are tailored to the final application of the coated metal panel (building products, beverage cans, domestic appliances, etc.). The total film thickness is aroundRead More …

Qualicoat-Test Methods and Requirements
Test Methods and Requirements The test methods described below are used to test finished products and/or coating systems for approval (see chapters 4 and 5). For the mechanical tests (sections 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8), the test panels must be made of the alloy AA 5005-H24 or -H14 (AlMg 1 – semihard) with a thickness of 0.8 or 1 mm, unless otherwise approved by the Technical Committee. Tests using chemicals and corrosion tests should be performed on extruded sections made ofRead More …

Important to monitor the environmental conditions during powder paint application
Why is it important of Monitoring environmental conditions in application of powder paint? To help avoid powder paint substandard construction, surface treatment and paint under the best environmental conditions, lining construction is very important. The most important task of the environmental control of temperature, surface temperature, humidity and dew point control. The dew point is the moisture just the temperature when dew formation in the surface layer of the steel. Moisture will cause the steel to rust in just blastedRead More …
